EBROHIMI, Warri North LGA – The historic community of Ebrohimi in Warri North LGA recently played host to a spectacular cultural festival, drawing Itsekiris and well-wishers from far and wide to celebrate the rich heritage of the region. The festival, held in December 2024, was a vibrant showcase of Itsekiri traditions, with captivating masquerade performances, energetic dancing, and a strong sense of community spirit.

Ebrohimi, nestled deep within the creeks of Warri North, holds a significant place in Itsekiri history. It served as the base for Olomu Aseroko, the father of the legendary Nanna Olomu, and was the site of a pivotal battle between Nanna Olomu’s forces and the British in 1894. This year’s festival served as a powerful reminder of the community’s resilience and its enduring commitment to preserving its cultural identity.
The festival grounds were transformed into a kaleidoscope of colors and sounds, as attendees, young and old, immersed themselves in the festivities. Itsekiri men and boys proudly donned their finest attire, showcasing elegant kemijes, wrappers, and okun (beads), complemented by traditional walking sticks and hats. Women and girls radiated beauty in their colorful blouses and wrappers, with some adorning their hair with intricate styles.

The highlight of the festival was undoubtedly the breathtaking performances of the Itsekiri masquerades. The Olekun, Orubeni, and Oki masquerades, each with its unique character and symbolism, captivated the audience with their intricate dance moves and mesmerizing presence. The rhythmic beats of the Itsekiri drums – Agba, iyi ogume, oton ogume, okiri, gboki, and the oma (bell) – fueled the energy of the dancers, creating an electrifying atmosphere that resonated throughout the community.
