LONDON, UK – The Ugbajo Itsekiri UK hosted its 12th Annual Gala and Charity Nite on Saturday, July 26, 2025, a landmark event that has become the premier gathering for Itsekiris across the United Kingdom.

The gala, held at the Holiday Inn London – Brentford Lock, was the third under the leadership of President Mr. Mejebi Eyewuoma, bringing together members, dignitaries, and sister organisations for a night of culture, unity, and celebration.
The atmosphere was charged with reverence and joy as the Olu of Warri, accompanied by his wife, Olori Atuwatse III, graced the occasion for the second time in three years. This was widely seen as a testament to the monarch’s deep commitment to his subjects in the diaspora. The royal entourage included a distinguished group of chiefs from Warri Kingdom, such as Chief Otimeyin Adams, Chief Dr. Richmond Macgrey, Chief Sam Amatoritsero, Chief Dr. Eugene Ikomi, Chief Emmanuel Oritsẹjọlọmi Uduaghan, Chief Dr. Mogbeyiteren Eyeoyibo, and Chief (Mrs.) Ẹbiyẹmi Omatsẹye.

A significant moment of the evening was the historic conferment of the Royal Order of Iwere upon Captain Emmanuel Hayes, CFR, a celebrated Patron of Ugbajo Itsekiri UK and Nigeria’s first commercial pilot of Itsekiri and British descent. Captain Hayes was honoured for his recent 90th birthday and a remarkable career spanning over five decades. The conferment marked the first time the prestigious award has been bestowed by the Olu in the diaspora, making the occasion a truly historic milestone.
In his powerful address, Ogiame Atuwatse III urged all Itsekiris to embrace unity and passionately advocate for the deliberate propagation of their rich culture and language. He commended the commendable efforts of Ugbajo Itsekiri UK and the entire Itsekiri community in the United Kingdom for their work.
Beyond the celebration, the 12th Annual Gala served a crucial charitable purpose, raising vital funds for the organisation’s yearly health outreach programs and a new Itsekiri language curriculum, an initiative being developed in partnership with the Palace. The event also fostered a spirit of community and friendship, with several sister organisations, including the Warri National Union and Warri Progressive Society, in attendance alongside other dignitaries.
