Itsekiri dancers at Jakpa communityJakpa Community Dancers

Let me begin by, appreciating the efforts of the Trust Chairman, led by Amus Boyo, and the Youth Chairman and PRO, led by Hope, who provided a conducive environment for the memories to remain in our hearts.

The atmosphere was filled with joy and happiness, as all the sons and daughters of Jakpa Community Benin River, in Warri North LGA, converged from around the world to celebrate the festive period in a unique way, distinct from the township.

Upon docking at the jetty, you will behold the community’s beauty, as entertainers, commonly referred to as Agogo boys/girls, regale you with joy and happiness, escorting you to your family compound. Those responsible for food preparation are busy cooking, while those in charge of slaughtering the cows are also attending to their task, and those overseeing entertainment are likewise engaged, with the chairman ensuring that all aspects are well executed.

The entertainment area was comprehensively utilized, boasting a lively ambiance replete with sound and tastefully decorated for the varied activities programmed over multiple days. On the 24th, an impressive quintet of activities was arranged; beginning with a captivating performance by Ilaje dancers, succeeded by the Omoko dance, a gripping female football competition in the afternoon, and concluding with a Kompini dance at the Community Hall in the evening. Additionally, a church service took place around 10 pm, after which community members gathered at Oboghoro for the Oboghoro Festival.

The second day, being Christmas Day, we took a walk from Jakpa Community to Gbokoda Community (My birthday place) and to Tebu Community all in the Benin River axis and returned, where I saw children from various groups come together, moving from one family compound to another, singing an Itsekiri song. After receiving monetary gifts, they offered prayers in the Itsekiri language.

Meanwhile, preparations were in full swing for the masquerade performance on Boxing Day. On the Boxing Day, the drums began beating, signaling the start. Women and others started emerging for the ceremony. The atmosphere was indeed festive, with children roaming freely with excitement without fear. I eagerly anticipate next year’s celebration, God willing.
