In the heart of Warri North Local Government Area of Delta State, the Utonlila community recently came alive with vibrant colours, rhythmic beats, and cultural fervour during its annual Utonlila Community end-of-year festival. This annual celebration, which took place on the 25th of December 2023, brought together the Itsekiri people in a display of their rich cultural heritage.

Utonlila, nestled within the Warri North LGA, is renowned for its commitment to preserving and promoting the Itsekiri culture, and the end-of-year festival was a testament to this dedication. The festivities provided a platform for the community members to immerse themselves in traditional practices, showcasing the unique customs and rituals that define the Itsekiri way of life. The festival was organised by the Utonlila community trust, led by Mr Metelewawo Ayogbenga Ukuenyinden Monday, aka Monday Nigeria. 

A highlight of the event was the mesmerizing display of Itsekiri masquerades, each with its distinctive costume and symbolism. These masquerades, considered sacred in Itsekiri tradition, added a mystical and enchanting element to the celebration, captivating locals and visitors alike. The intricate dance performances further brought to life the cultural richness embedded in every movement.

Interestingly, Utonlila is a twin community, and its counterpart, Oboghoro, also played host to a significant cultural event. The Oboghoro festival unfolded over three days, from the 22nd to the 24th of December 2023, showcasing a parallel celebration of Itsekiri culture and tradition. These consecutive festivals created a unique opportunity for residents and visitors to experience the diversity and depth of Itsekiri customs.

The festivals not only served as a time for cultural celebration but also as a period of reflection and gratitude. As the year drew to a close, the Utonlila community expressed appreciation for the blessings of the past year and looked forward to the promise of the upcoming one.
