The ancient city of Warri came alive with rhythmic drumming and vibrant colours on Friday as the Otu-oma Odokun Cultural Society (popularly known as Sisan Odokun) commenced its highly anticipated 56th Anniversary and Masquerade Cultural Festival.
Held at the society’s venue on Pessu Street, behind the Daudu Police Station, off Odion Road, Day 1 of the three-day festival was a marathon of cultural display, featuring a rare triple-header of masquerade performances that thrilled hundreds of spectators.

The festivities began early in the morning session with the majestic entry of the Agbakara (Crocodile) masquerade, a display grounded in deep Itsekiri aquatic tradition. As the day progressed into the afternoon, the tempo increased with the performance of the Ajamala masquerade, captivating the crowd with its unique steps.
The climax of Day 1 arrived in the evening session. Under the setting sun, Igodo masquerade took centre stage, closing the opening day with a high-energy performance backed by the society’s signature Ogono drummers and dancers.
Dignitaries Grace the Occasion
The significance of the Otu-oma Odokun society in the cultural landscape of Warri was underscored by the high-profile guest list.
Top government officials and traditional chiefs attended to pay their respects and witness the heritage display. Notable guests included the Agwinode of Warri Kingdom, Chief Otimeyin Adams, who praised the society for sustaining the tradition for 56 years.
The political sphere was well represented by the Executive Chairman of Warri South Local Government Council, Hon. Oritseweyinmi Agbas, who arrived accompanied by several councillors from the legislative arm. Also in attendance was the Honourable Commissioner for Agriculture, Delta State, Barr. Val Arenyeka, and Hon. Emma Nunu, signifying strong state and local government support for the cultural sector. Community leadership was also present, led by Mr. A. Ogbobine, the Trust Chairman of Usele Community.
The Celebration Continues
The 56th-anniversary celebration continues through the weekend. With the bar set high on Friday, organisers have promised even more spectacular displays of Ogono music, dance, and masquerade appearances for Saturday and the grand finale on Sunday, December 7th.
